The Chishty Foundation began the International Sufi Rang Festival 15 years ago in Dargah Ajmer Sharif, as a celebration and showcase of the many strands and “colours” of creative expression found across time and space from the world of Islamic mysticism.

Bringing together ancient and contemporary works, this annual festival aims to preserve and inspire the tradition of sacred art among the youth of today – and tomorrow, while promoting peace, beauty. compassion, service to humanity and Earth stewardship between spiritual traditions and communities.

The annual International Sufi Rang festival is an ideal space in which to provide a platform of support for spiritually oriented international artists of many mediums, such as painting, calligraphy, photography and crafts, as well as sacred music. The sacred site of Dargah Ajmer Sharif is inherently nourishing, both spiritually and creatively. Khawaja Gharib Nawaz (r.a) was the creator of the sublime art of Qawwali and a Master of mystic poetry, which are still very much alive here today.

Haji Syed Salman Chishty, Chairman of the Chishty Foundation and the creator of the International Sufi Rang Festival, wanted to provide real support for these powerful traditions and honor the essential, and often unrecognised role, that sacred art and artists play in creating a more beautiful future for all.

His passion for sharing the blessed message of Khawaja Gharib Nawaz (r.a) “Love towards All, Malice towards None” along with his longing for drawing together the mystic Islamic world of Sufi’s and Spiritual Cultures worldwide, in service to humanity and creation, are core parts of the heart essence of this breathtakingly beautiful and soul enriching festival.

Sufi Rang has grown in both depth and dynamism year upon year, and it continues to be an honour for the Chishty Foundation to share the beauty of The Beloved with all who come to the festival, irrespective of caste, creed, gender or any other barriers that exist outside of the mystic spheres.

Just as each exhibition has its own unique flavour, so too does each piece – be it ancient or contemporary, traditional or avant-garde, craft or calligraphy – all are imbued with the artist’s own inspired perception of/relationship with The Real. With this in mind, Chishty Foundation has sought to showcase the works not just of well known artists – masters of their mediums – but also the work of “undiscovered” artists with that rare combination of spiritual passion and creative talent.

The ethos of our exhibitions is rooted in the concept of Spiritual Poverty, so there are no famous names to be found here, rather it is sincerity and mastery for the sake of something deeper, something higher that draws both artists and audiences in, year after year.

It continues to be our privilege to host both art and artists here in the holy precincts of Ajmer Sharif and to send them with blessings to many collaborative spaces world-wide, bringing together people from all walks of life with the Sufi message of peace and love through that universal language – Art.
